Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
As the ABA Journal marked its first 100 years in 2015, we took on a lofty challenge: To honor the past while reflecting the present, and to do so in a way that emphasized vast experience and journalistic excellence over the simple fact of age.
Our January issue featured staff essays on each of the Journal’s ten decades—a timeline of the significant historical and cultural events witnessed by the Journal; enterprise journalism and substantive discussions with a forward-looking feature on the UK experience with Alternative Business Systems, along with a piece on the potentially disruptive rise of non-lawyer “legal technicians”; and to round out the issue, a work of fiction, the winning short story in the ABA Journal/Ross Short Legal Fiction Contest.
In February, featured a remarkable narrative about the fall of the law firm Dewey & LeBoeuf unraveled a complicated tale of recklessness, deceit and economic decline; and a profile of lawyers who face prison and death in nations hostile to the rule of law.
March highlighted a writer’s special role helping lawyers in death penalty cases; the tragic role of substance abuse when lawyers steal from clients and, conversely, the need for lawyers to vet clients who may be lying about their case.
These are only the features in the first three issues, which include striking designs designs, arresting images and distinctive departments.
We are proud to submit the ABA Journal for your consideration as ASBPE’s Magazine of the Year.
