APTly Spoken
Issue date (if applicable):
Publication name: APTly Spoken
Publishing company: National Apartment Association
Website home page: http://www.naahq.org/blog
Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
National Apartment Association (NAA) members represent all facets of the rental housing industry: apartment owners, management executives, developers, builders, investors, property managers, leasing consultants, maintenance personnel, suppliers and related business professionals throughout the United States and Canada.
NAA’s units Magazine strives to meet the challenge of appealing to such a diverse audience both digitally and in print with panache, using information such as tip lists, fresh marketing trends, and “how-to” guidance on maintenance in our regularly appearing departments, and case studies and best practices in our feature articles to give our readers the information and ideas they need to better operate their apartments. Lauren Boston's blogs on APTly Spoken tease articles appearing in the magazine, encouraging readers to move to our flagship publication for the full story.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
In an era when readers jump from multiple forms of communication, associations must find a consistent and effective link between their print and online efforts to boost readership and marketing. NAA’s blog, APTly Spoken, does just that, featuring humorous weekly blog posts by NAA’s staff writer that tie her personal experiences with topics reported on in units Magazine.
In one such blog, “Why You Gotta Be So Mean,” the author tackles a prevalent but rarely discussed problem in the apartment housing industry: A breakdown in friendly communication among competitors. In breaking the ice with a humorous story about her own run-in with an elementary school bully—and weaving in the theme of Taylor Swift’s now infamous dismissal of “haters”—the author shines a light on the cultural shift that has occurred in apartment management, an industry in which companies once leaned on one another as resources to help improve market conditions or problem-solve operational issues. Today, it’s every company for itself—to everyone’s detriment.
The blog--one example of her weekly column--drew readers to the magazine for the full story, and started a dialogue among industry professionals who would benefit from a relationship with their so-called rivals.
