Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
When members of the public are subject to the ill treatment of powerful businesses, TheStreet’s columnist Susan Antilla weighs in with solid reporting and sharp analysis.
Her columns in 2015 included thoughtful assessments of an important gender discrimination trial and pointed coverage of efforts by the financial industry to protect unscrupulous stockbrokers.
Much was written in 2015 about the high-profile gender discrimination case brought by Ellen Pao against the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Antilla’s columns took readers beyond the issues detailed in the daily coverage.
Antilla highlighted how unusual it was that a woman could demand a trial at all, given the chilling effect of mandatory arbitration.
She gave no quarter to hypocritical arguments offered by the defense. Pao was criticized for her “sharp elbows” at a firm that described its partners as “humble.” Yet testimony at the trial “has depicted pushy, self-promoting professionals” who talk over each other at meetings,” she wrote.
Her columns also took on Wall Street for its incessant efforts to avoid change that might improve access to stockbroker records or to hold those brokers to higher standards.
With the authority that comes from decades of experience and fastidious research, Antilla called out the securities industry for its empty arguments that tougher regulations would force brokers to drop smaller investors as customers.
In Antilla, investors and employees have a much-needed advocate.
