Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
EDUCAUSE Review is the flagship print and online magazine for the higher education information technology (IT) community. It is published by EDUCAUSE, a nonprofit association whose mission is to advance higher education by promoting the creative use of information technology. The current EDUCAUSE membership comprises more than 2,200 colleges, universities, and educational organizations, including 300 corporations. The magazine audience (print distribution of ~22,000, plus ~100,000 monthly online pageviews) consists of EDUCAUSE member representatives (typically the college/university Chief Information Officer or other senior IT leader), as well as college/university presidents and chancellors, senior academic and administrative leaders, IT staff, faculty in all disciplines, librarians, members of higher education governing boards and associations, and IT industry leaders. A general-interest bimonthly magazine, the print edition of EDUCAUSE Review takes a broad look at current developments and trends in information technology, how they may affect the college/university as an institution, and what these mean for higher education and society today and tomorrow. The open-access online version comprises more comprehensive coverage, including the content of the print magazine plus peer-reviewed articles, practical advice and guidance, interactive elements, and multimedia about managing and using IT resources in higher education. The content in EDUCAUSE Review is written and produced not by professional freelancers but instead by the readers themselves: the community of leaders and practitioners in the field. The magazine thus presents a comprehensive, insider’s view of information technology and higher education.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
This podcast was meant to help technologists in academia learn about possible futures for the academic movement toward massive open online courses (MOOCs), a topic of great interest in higher education for its promise of cost savings and high student enrollments. The guest, futurist Bryan Alexander, is a rock star in the higher education teaching and learning and technology field. As a highly regarded and frequent conference speaker, author, and consultant, he extrapolates what might happen to a trend in years to come. He also uses social media frequently and effectively, and networks widely among the community both online and in person. The EDUCAUSE media producer invited him to participate in a phone interview, recorded an extensive conversation by phone, and edited the resulting audio into something listenable and engaging about MOOCs.
