Publication name: HR Magazine
Publishing company: Society for Human Resource Management
Website home page: http://www.shrm.org/publications/hrmagazine/pages/default.aspx
Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
HR Magazine has the largest circulation of any human resources publication in the world. It covers business, legal, and management trends relevant to human resource professionals and profiles leaders in the field. As the flagship publication for the Society for Human Resource Management, it is distributed to more than 275,000 members in over 160 countries. The readers of HR Magazine are primarily HR professionals in the for-profit sector, but also include government and non-profit professionals, as well as top executives, consultants, academics, employment lawyers and others.
Our goal is to provide timely, engaging and useful content that will enable those working in HR at any level to do their jobs better and advance in their careers. Our feature articles are in-depth, multi-source analyses of current trends that go beyond simply quoting experts to interpreting what they say—along with relevant research and information on new technology, products or job market trends—and providing practical, easy-to-follow steps that our readers can apply to their own work.
The magazine is distributed 10 times per year to all SHRM members as well as a small group of non-member subscribers. It is available in print, digital, online and mobile formats.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
The September cover story for HR Magazine, titled “A Remarkable Transformation,” sought to educate our readers, including more than 275,000 human resources professionals around the world, about the quickly changing legal landscape regarding transgender individuals in the workplace. Last summer, the transformation of the former Bruce Jenner into Caitlyn put a famous, public face on an often-overlooked segment of the LGBT community. We wanted to highlight, in a way that was informative without being sensationalistic, real workers who have undergone a gender transition and glean lessons from their experience that would be helpful to HR professionals.
The article was particularly timely and relevant to our audience because employment law related to transgender rights is in the midst of significant change. More than 20 states and many municipalities have recently expanded their anti-discrimination protections to include transgender individuals. Moreover, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) asserted earlier this year that gender identity is included within Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Our intent was to share practical advice that would help HR professionals to lead with compassion and minimize risk for their companies.
