Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
One look at the Journal’s February, March and April issues conveys the depth, drama and detail this magazine provides our legal-industry readers, news sources and the general public. From the age-old issue of race and gender diversity to the onrushing future of artificial intelligence; from international rights in China to the very local problems of bail for the indigent, and with arresting images and compelling writing, the Journal presents essential news in a legal context, but in a broad-reaching style.
Our dramatic “Detained” cover teases to two important stories: the first covering China’s sometimes vicious crackdown on the lawyers who fight for human rights; and the second featuring the lawyer who fought to secure rights for immigrant minors. And we profile a warrior of the saving and loan crisis now stymied by the lack of federal action against those responsible for the Great Recession.
With “Invisible then Gone” we called the legal profession to task for failing to advance women of color; detailed the plight of non-English speakers navigating an incredibly complex court system; and took an in-depth look what legal professionals need to know about developing areas of neuroscience and the study of pain.
Our smart coverage of artificial intelligence and its real-world implications for the legal industry featured three firms developing their own technology to make them more competitive in an increasingly technology-driven world. The issue rounded out with an investigation into financial bail, its many flaws and implications for civil rights.
