Banking on Millennials? A Special Report
Issue date (if applicable): 5/1/2016
Publication name: ABA Banking Journal
Publishing company: American Bankers Association / Naylor LLC
Website home page: http://bankingjournal.aba.com
Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
The ABA Banking Journal is the 108-year-old flagship magazine of the American Bankers Association. Our mission is to educate bankers about the latest industry trends, keep them abreast of changes on the horizon, inspire them with thought leadership and communicate relevant ABA news to them. We reach approximately 25,000 readers in the banking community with our print edition, principally bank CEOs, presidents, board members and senior officers (vice president and above) at banks of all sizes and charter types.
Our content represents the diversity of the banking industry itself. In any given issue, we cover payments, cybersecurity, mortgages, retail banking, agricultural lending, insurance, business loans, consumer loans, the U.S. economy, wealth management, human resources, risk management, regulatory compliance and public policy.
We also have a strong focus on leadership and on helping bankers grow as leaders in their institutions (see the submitted July/August issue) and their communities (see the Innovations in Social Responsibility column that closes every issue).
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
The rise of the millennial generation is a major priority for bankers, who want to understand how best to engage these young Americans as customers and employees. We developed a set of special features on millennials for our May/June issue. We also paired these features with a profile of an emerging millennial banking industry leader -- an agricultural lender in Montana who also wrangles cattle on her family's ranch.
The special report drew on industry expertise and on experts from outside our sector, such as pollster and TV commentator Kristen Soltis Anderson and Weekly Standard editor Ethan Epstein. This section featured a unique design and forward-thinking editorial -- for example, including a feature exploring what fast-declining marriage rates mean for the traditional products bankers have long offered and an article identifying student debt as a major hurdle to full engagement.
We also incorporated infographics into the special section and printed a tip-in of a related infographic (see here: http://www.aba.com/Tools/Documents/Millennials-Banking-Infographic.pdf) as an additional supplement.
The attention given to the special report drove major investments by our parent association in the months that followed, including the establishment of a Millennials Task Force whose strategic recommendations for the industry -- projected to total hundreds of thousands of dollars -- were adopted by the organization's leadership.
