Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
Since its founding 40 years ago, Athletic Business' mission has to help advance and improve the athletic, fitness and recreation industries by providing coverage of key issues related to facility financing, design, construction and operation; equipment purchasing and maintenance; program management and operations; budgeting and marketing; risk management and event security. We have created a community to promote exchange of ideas and solutions, and our readers look to us for coverage of timely topics — such as equipment innovations or how new laws and policies will affect their facilities and staffing — as well as educational articles on equipment cleaning, staff management or lighting design.
Athletic Business is read in print by more than 40,000 subscribers representing colleges and universities, high schools, park and recreation departments, military branches and bases, health clubs, YMCAs, professional sports teams, stadiums and arenas, sports architecture firms, and hospital and corporate wellness centers. Our daily e-newsletter reaches 40,000 subscribers, and our website sees 200,000 average monthly visitors.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
FAA regulations are not a topic covered often by Athletic Business. However, unmanned aerial devices, or drones, are an emerging issue across our readership base. They can be both a threat and an asset, depending on the operator’s intent. At the time of this article, drones were classified as aircraft and largely subject to the same regulations, bu the FAA was preparing to approve a new set of regulations that would allow more freedom for drone operators.
My goal was to empower our readers to know their rights and responsibilities with regard to these devices, whether they were a parks department offering a drone-flying club for hobbyists, a stadium operator seeking to keep unwanted drones out of their perimeter, or an event director wanting to capture footage for promotional use.
The FAA's website, as well as interviews and emails with FAA representatives, served as my primary resources for writing this article. The FAA offers a wealth of information that can be intimidating if a reader is unsure what they're looking for. Writing this article also involved researching the latest legal issues related to drones, as well as reading though information from drone enthusiasts. My ultimate goal was to empower our readers by providing a basic understanding of drones and drone regulations as they pertain to our audience, illuminating the planned changes and their impact on our readers, and pointing them to the resources that would be most helpful to them to stay informed on future developments.
