The mission of Club + Resort Business magazine is to provide country club general managers and head golf professionals with educational information on best practices from their peers. This past fall, Portage Country Club in Akron, Ohio, hosted an event called the PGA HOPE Cup, a 9-hole golf scramble event for golfers who had participated in PGA HOPE clinics. HOPE in this context stands for Helping Our Patriots Everywhere. PGA HOPE is a program that provides free golf lessons to veterans and active duty military service members. Some of the veterans who attended PGA HOPE clinics were invited to participate in this end-of-season tournament. I attended the event and put together a six-minute video that contained Portage Country Club's general manager and head golf professional speaking about why they agreed to host the event. I also took a video of a Northern Ohio PGA official sharing his appreciation to the club for hosting the event. The footage also includes an introduction from myself, as well as highlights of the scramble event. I shot all of the video footage on my company-issued cell phone, and then edited the footage and put together the final product using the iMovie program. I coordinated my visit via email with a PGA HOPE communications representative. Country club leaders often want to host charity events at their facility. This particular feature showed these leaders an example of a charitable event that they could host. PGA HOPE has clinics happening in many states throughout the U.S., so there is a pretty good chance that a country club GM could locate a nearby PGA HOPE program and offer to host both clinics and tournaments at their facility.
