Description of the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Despite another year dominated by a transformation agenda and getting digital operations in order, CIOs are finding their footing as invaluable strategic partners for the business, writes CIO.com's Beth Stackpole in her analysis of CIO.com parent company Foundry’s 2023 State of the CIO research report. The 22nd iteration of our annual State of the CIO research surveyed 837 IT leaders and 201 line of business (LOB) executives on a range of issues and challenges CIOs are currently facing, as well as how they are implementing technologies in service of business objectives and how they see their role evolving in the years ahead. The research and subsequent interviews with survey respondents, fellow IT leaders, and analysts provide the backbone for a series of articles that collectively provide a detailed picture of the state of the IT industry and the CIO role today. In addition to Stackpole’s overview, and John Gallant’s survey webcast, several CIO.com contributors in the weeks following the survey’s release delved deeper into various facets of the state of the CIO role, ranging from top CEO directives, to the increasing need for CIOs to become change makers and to drive new revenue, as well as what CIOs see to be the most essential skills and the most difficult roles to fill in achieving their agendas. Overall, the State of the CIO demonstrates that, in 2023, ongoing economic uncertainty and the vast potential of emerging technologies to transform business have underscored the significant role CIOs play when it comes to business strategy, leading to a remit with impact that transcends IT. “The CIO role today is really a business leadership role that is not necessarily focused on technology,” says Kevin Gray, CIO for the City of Burbank, Calif. “We are helping form strategy for our organizations, laying out roadmaps, and developing policy in ways we didn’t in the past.” Or, as Sastry Durvasula, CIO and client services officer at TIAA, adds: “This is the best time to be on the CIO career path. The branches are wide open.”
