One of the most significant trends among our dentist readership in recent years has been general practitioners adding more specialty procedures to their offerings in order to keep more business in-house. Declining insurance reimbursements and increasing costs of doing business have led to razor thin profit margins and increased the importance of maximizing volume, and one of the best ways to do that is to add more tools to your proverbial tool chest and use them to do more work. With the headline "Tools of the Trade," we liked the imagery of the Swiss Army knife, so we asked our illustrator to add dental tools to replace some of the items while retaining the obvious look of a Swiss Army knife. The corkscrew tool was cleverly turned into the threads of a dental implant to retain some familiarity there as well. The dental scaler, mirror, carbide bur, and periotome were no-brainers in terms of dental imagery, but upon reviewing the first version, a team member noted that we should add more specialty tools. We brainstormed and came up with the idea to swap the standard blade out for a scalpel blade, like the ones used for periodontal surgery, and the screw driver for an implant driver. We were thrilled with the result - an image that demonstrated a wide variety of dental tools incorporated into one central piece.
