COVID-19 demonstrated that no one was prepared for a pandemic—even though infectious disease and public health specialists have been warning for years that a global outbreak was possible. Despite all the money thrown at the pandemic, U.S. public health departments still are not ready for another one. All that money was used just to combat COVID-19. So, like Cassandra, ID and public health specialists utter warnings no one believes while waiting for the next pandemic to arrive. As we reported, the most likely suspect is an avian strain of influenza that becomes effective at human transmission. This could cause a pandemic worse than COVID-19. We reported that a fairly persistent avian flu outbreak is being closely watched by animal and human health specialists. We interviewed not only flu specialists at the CDC and Vanderbilt University, but also veterinary specialists who are involved in the bird flu outbreak to find out what was going on—and why this outbreak cannot be contained. Like COVID-19, many diseases come from animals, so a close watch on animal outbreaks is important to my readers. Even though it did not go live online until Dec. 12, our coverage was the second most read article that month. I am glad IDSE was able to keep our readers informed so, at least, they could be prepared.
