Our readership is made up primarily of small business owners who plan to someday sell their dental practices, and one of the most critical decisions they will need to make is whether to sell to a corporate DSO (dental support organization). Financial considerations aside, most would prefer to pass their practices off to younger dentists who would keep them private, but the money being offered by DSOs today is often too much to pass up. This article discussed that decision and explored the important considerations for those who do choose the DSO route, so we needed art that would be appropriately bold. We wanted cash to be prominent, and at the same time we wanted to portray the idea that DSOs are selective in which practices they give the most lucrative deals to. We loved the idea of a claw crane, as seen in arcades, selecting something from among a pile of cash to represent a practice getting selected by the optimal partner amid all kinds of monetary opportunities. Having our illustrator make that object a tooth was important; the topic of DSOs is a sensitive one, and the cash imagery made it even bolder for a noble profession that considers its primary mission to be serving patients, so having a nice-looking tooth rising from among all that cash ensured that our readers know we value their work above all else. The result was an eye-catching yet tasteful feature.
