Before Ferguson Beyond Ferguson, a nonprofit storytelling project, has been shining a light on the lives of people in the 63106 zip code as they deal with the daily impact of the pandemic. This zip code has been identified as having the most problematic social determinants of health in the St. Louis region. Average life expectancy before the pandemic was 67, 18 years shorter than the life expectancy of 85 in the region’s wealthiest zip code.
A dedicated group of reporters, photographers and illustrators has done an exceptional job with this public health reporting. They educated readers about how poverty’s complex web can harm health and about the social and economic barriers many face in this St. Louis zip code and in surrounding communities.
The article submitted here is the third installment of a series that has run since the start of the pandemic in Health Progress, the journal of the Catholic Health Association of the United States. Health Progress produces about 15,000 print copies per issue and has a dedicated staff of three employees.
The Before Ferguson Beyond Ferguson project shows how essential and meaningful work can be done by pooling resources across media outlets and nonprofit organizations. And how, by working together, these groups can uncover systemic flaws and work toward needed reforms.
63106 has been identified as having the most problematic social determinants of health in the region. Average life expectancy (before Covid) 67 compared to 85 in 63105 (Clayton), the region’s wealthiest zip code.
