Have you ever met an inventor who swallows his own experimental medical devices? Torrey Smith and his team of engineers at medtech startup Endiatx have developed ever-shrinking prototypes of a swimming camera robot that can take a look inside your stomach on its way through your digestive system. The disposable PillBot is wirelessly controlled by a doctor who would otherwise need to sedate you to stick a tube down your throat, and even then, only after months of stomach problems and doctor’s appointments. One day, that same doctor might be able to use Endiatx technology to take tissue samples or stop stomach bleeds. To give the world its first good look at this revolutionary device, Medical Design & Outsourcing commissioned and directed shoots for portraits and product photography for our most striking cover photo in recent years. It wasn't a news release or PR firm that got our attention — we first connected with Smith on LinkedIn as part of our regular outreach to medtech innovators. Research for this story included interviews with the Endiatx team, reviews of FDA documents and device schematics, viewings of footage from product development and testing, and conversations with gastrointestinal, regulatory and industry experts. (However, this writer did not give PillBot a go through his own body.)
