Entry Essay:
The Most Powerful Women in Banking is an annual ranking that is regarded as the premiere list for the banking and financial services industry. It is designed to honor the achievements of women in a male-dominated industry. Compiling the list and the nominees’ profiles takes nearly six months from start to finish, and its release is highly anticipated by the industry.
A core team of six editorial staffers reads several hundred submissions that American Banker receives in late April/early May, and each nomination is ranked according to a proprietary system of metrics designed to quantify each individual objectively.
The final list consists of a ranking of 25 women in banking, 25 women in finance, 25 women to watch and five top teams.
Once the list has been finalized in early July, staff and freelancers are charged with interviewing each honoree and team, and then writing up a 500- to 1,000-word profile for each of the 80 honorees.
The interviews are a challenge to arrange, as these women are in the senior ranks of leadership at their institutions — such as Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser, JP Morgan Chase’s asset & wealth management CEO Mary Callahan Erdoes and TIAA CEO Thasunda Brown Duckett — and their availability can be limited.
The list is embargoed until early October and the 80 profiles appear in print and online. It is the most-read feature on the American Banker site each year.
