Entry Essay:
POWER is the one brand that addresses all electric power generation, and related technologies and fuels, for a global audience, providing vast insight on this complex industry. Established in 1882, it is dedicated to providing exclusive news and analysis on the latest trends and best practices supporting power generation and related infrastructure. POWER has literally hundreds of thousands of power professionals in its database of subscribers including C-suite executives, plant managers, engineers, technicians, operators, contractors, suppliers, equipment manufacturers, and more. Through several platforms, including print, digital, and in person events, POWER equips generation professionals and those who support them with the resources they need to make informed decisions focused on the future.
The June Special Report submitted for this ASBPE award is focused on Transmission & Distribution, a very important topic for the power industry as it transitions to ever-greater levels of clean energy resources. Many of the most pressing issues were addressed by POWER's staff of well-qualified editors. The role the federal government is playing in the buildout of new infrastructure was part of the opening article, while the importance microgrids could play in the power sector was touched on next. Risks posed by geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) events—a topic of regular interest within POWER's audience—were part of the special report, with strategies presented to mitigate the problem. A crisis developing within the transformer supply chain has proven to be the most engaging article to POWER's audience based on web traffic following its online release. Rounding out the special report were articles on grid infrastructure upgrades, high-voltage power transmission projects, and grid stability solutions. All of this content is of great importance to POWER's audience and included vital information to help advance the industry. While POWER may not offer the freshest of designs or flashiest imagery, what it lacks in aesthetics, it makes up for in content substance. Thus, we believe this special report is worthy of recognition and an ASBPE award.
