Description of the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Landscape Architecture Magazine, founded in 1910, is the official magazine of the American Society of Landscape Architects. It is the foremost resource for landscape architects, a design profession increasingly at the forefront of climate and social resilience. The magazine provides a forum to present and discuss key issues in both the practice and culture of landscape architecture, as well as a platform for new voices and ideas in the profession. LAM's thoughtful and provocative examinations of concepts, context, plans, built projects, and design practices serve professionals and students while illustrating the breadth of the profession's works through photography, illustration, and journalism.
Landscape architects love details, the story behind the story. Two feature articles exemplified in these issues capture a unique slice of the landscape architecture scope.
“Range Rover,” April 2023, profiles the firm Ruderal and the unconventional path its founder took. Capturing the vibe of the studio and its home city, Tbilisi, was our goal when we pored over hundreds of images. A local photographer was commissioned to shoot the staff in the office and field. Miniature mock-ups, unconventional sketches, and more traditional plans are shown to illustrate the firm’s eclectic nature, juxtaposed against the backdrop of rural Georgia.
“The Sedge Insurgency,” May 2023, offers a detailed look at sedges (groundcover grasses) and the ways landscape architects are incorporating them in the place of less-sustainable mown lawns. An intriguing opening spread sets the tone and then jumps right into an exemplary project. Space is devoted to showing the anatomy of sedges for readers outside the profession, as well as subtle sidebars with botanical photographs.
