The Am Law 100/200 is, in our view, the legal industry’s premier data project each year, and while the numbers speak for themselves in some ways, they don’t tell their own story. The Am Law 100/200 “club” is exclusive, but the data set can feel truly vast. It’s up to the journalists and the design team to break down these stats for a curious and demanding–but also very busy–audience.

Surfacing and analyzing key data through breakouts such as “The Market Turns on a Dime” and “Who Won the Pandemic” contextualizes multi-year financial lookbacks in a way that the “traditional” revenue and profitability charts really can’t. Speaking of lookbacks, here, readers can use 10-year graphs (along with the written reporting) to benchmark not only their recent fiscal years, but past ones as well, helping to answer the difficult questions about their firms’ long-term trajectory. The same strategy allowed the team to break out and illustrate the (ever-growing) subset of firms in the “$1 billion club.”

In short, the design elements, in harmony with the newsroom’s high-level analysis, allow readers to digest the most crucial aspects of this vast pool of data–something that would otherwise take hours of reviewing less-refined or facilely presented data. The Am Law 100/200 remains the best way for large law firms in the U.S. to benchmark their financial performance and evaluate their business strategies relative to their hard-driving competition. It’s our design team and talented journalists who put this data in actionable context, enabling firms to truly get the competitive advantage for which they come to us.
