While many Americans have likely grown to appreciate the benefits of 5G wireless technologies, one thing they’re probably not aware of is just how limited that spectrum is and how contentious of a battle it is for who can claim it. The U.S. Department of Defense has for decades held on to a quite sizable portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that is used for 5G as it's critical to operations and communications of the military services, as well as technologies like radar, satellite communications and navigation systems. However, as more and more commercial services and other industries vie for 5G to provide modern communications and Internet of Things-enabled technologies, the Pentagon has been put in a predicament and asked to share that spectrum.
DefenseScoop’s Mikayla Easley in her story “Pentagon, telecom industry’s battle over spectrum symptomatic of a troubled system” did a remarkable job of not only detailing the tension among the key players in the electromagnetic spectrum space but also bringing to life how the technology works and is used today, and how outdated policy, legal and technological guardrails have plagued the nation’s spectrum management.
In her story, Easley convenes top experts on spectrum management and its applications in the defense sector to detail the risks of taking it away from the DOD. She also researched the topic thoroughly to present a clear and accurate understanding of how spectrum management works and supported it with graphics so that readers, whether technical or not, could grasp the issue at the heart of this topic.
