Medscape’s mission is to keep its audience of health care professionals informed on not only the latest news and treatments but how their practices and areas of expertise are affected by the world outside of their control. In this piece, we took a long, hard look at our public health system. While few Americans thought much about it before 2020, decisions were being made at the federal level that chipped away at the effectiveness and preparedness of our public health institutions. What COVID-19 laid bare, was just how much those institutions — and the public’s trust in them — had eroded over the years and continues today. Our story details what needs to be done for our public health system to regain its former stature … but will it ever happen?
