Description of the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
One of the first stories in our Children & the Law series, this feature takes a close look at a concept known as parental alienation, in which one parent engages in behaviors that cause a child to reject the other parent for no legitimate reason. This concept has been fraught with controversy, including in courts nationwide where attorneys on opposing sides of high-conflict divorce cases debate its relevance and existence. We talked with several of these attorneys as well as judges, psychologists, parents and children (who are now adults) who were separated from one parent and sent to reunification programs with the other parent to help “treat” parental alienation. Our goal was to shine a light on how parental alienation arises in cases involving children.
