Description of the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
American Police Beat has served as a trusted voice of our nation’s law enforcement community for more than three decades. We’ve earned this distinction by being the only law enforcement publication that is delivered to virtually every town, city, county and state law enforcement agency in the country. Peace officers of all types and ranks depend on us for in-depth coverage of the many pressing issues impacting their profession, and our writers are experts in their fields. With each monthly issue, APB strives to provide informative, entertaining and inspiring articles on the topics that matter most to our readers, from hard-hitting news and policy features to moving human-interest pieces, cutting-edge technology and training techniques, leadership skills and career tips, first-person narratives from real cops and editorials written by our nation’s top police officials, and guidance on the manifold health and safety concerns affecting officers.
While APB incorporates physical and emotional wellness content year-round, we place special focus on mental health in our annual September issue, which features a special section honoring National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month. Law enforcement continues to lose more members to suicide than to shooting and traffic accidents combined. For many years, intense stigma shrouded this topic in secrecy, leaving victims and survivors unacknowledged and discouraging officers from seeking the help they need before it’s too late. This attitude is gradually changing as more individuals and agencies recognize the extent of the crisis and the degree to which chronic and traumatic stress suffered in the line of duty can become an unbearable burden. Our special September section is dedicated to remembering the lives lost to suicide, reminding those who are struggling that they’re not alone and providing resources for healing.
The September 2023 Suicide Prevention and Awareness special section includes seven topical feature articles written by police psychologists and other wellness authorities — some of them regular APB contributors, others guest authors whose work is reprinted by permission from major law enforcement associations. Curated to encompass a range of facets of this complex subject, the content includes a direct message of help and hope for those considering suicide, an examination of the moral injuries that officers can suffer when responding to suicides and other crisis calls in the course of their jobs, a neurological explanation of the stress response caused by the threats encountered in the line of duty, and an analysis of the effects of the cumulative stress officers experience throughout their careers. The section provides guides to coping with grief and trauma, advice on choosing a mental health provider, and a list of suicide prevention resources.
As the law enforcement profession continues to grapple with the troubling prevalence of officer suicide, we at American Police Beat believe this annual special section is a vital way to help our readers and their agencies. By shining a spotlight on this difficult topic with accurate, enlightening and sensitive expert-written articles, we can help dispel stigma, spread the message that suicide is preventable, and offer support and hope.
