Description of the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
There are a lot of ad industry and business podcasts out there and only so much time in the day to consume them. Podcasts need to earn their spot in a listener’s rotation.
And that is exactly what the AdExchanger Talks podcast does every week. Through the art of intimate one-on-one conversation, we deftly interview industry leaders and explore the issues and trends that matter most to marketers, agencies, publishers and technology providers.
Our community downloaded AdExchanger Talks a quarter of a million times in the past year, with an average of more than 2,000 downloads within the first 30 days of a new episode dropping.
We handpick our guests not just for their titles, but because of their strong points of view and the important work they do – and we don’t shy away from harsh home truths about the ad tech industry.
Our guest on this episode of AdExchanger Talks is Nandini Jammi, co-founder of Check My Ads, a nonprofit and the ad tech industry’s first-ever independent watchdog. Jammi was also a co-founder of Sleeping Giants, the social media activism organization that put pressure on brands to boycott websites that spread disinformation, hate speech and other harmful content.
Although her background wasn’t in ad tech – Jammi started her career as a B2B marketer – she made it her mission to educate herself on the inner workings of programmatic advertising, an industry not known for transparency. By tracking how advertising dollars flow through the programmatic supply chain – and shining a light directly into its murky depths – Jammi and her small-but-mighty team of researchers are helping hold bad actors in the ad tech industry publicly accountable for their predatory behavior against advertisers and consumers.
When an industry holds up a mirror to its own practices, the picture isn’t always pretty. But as uncomfortable as the process may be, Jammi’s work makes it clear how necessary that process is on the road to creating a better, cleaner, more trustworthy industry.
You know the saying “sunlight is the best disinfectant”? Well, sometimes we need to disinfect with fire.
But the goal isn’t to burn the ad industry down. Having uncovered bad behavior, Check My Ads only names names after first approaching a company behind the scenes to try to fix whatever the problem may be.
As Jammi observes in this episode – which was downloaded more than 3,000 times: “Our goal as an organization is to constantly create change. … We’re ultimately a constructive organization. We’re not trying to tear things down.”
