Description of the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Architectural Products magazine holds a unique place in the architectural market because it digs deeper than design intent, down into the products, systems, and materials that architects actually selected—and that were installed—into a project.
We tell the story about what the design team—architects, specifying engineers, lighting designers, interior designers—hoped to achieve—and how the occupied space actually works with interviews from program directors, maintenance personnel, and even customers/visitors.
Architectural Products showcases the products that are in-use in noteworthy projects. While many of the projects we cover have been widely covered, even winning architecture awards in some cases, no other medium gives our audience (the architectural and design community) information about the specific solutions that helped to craft the final construction. Our writers interview members of the design team and product experts who can provide insights into why that particular product was the best choice. Then they put the pieces together so that our readers are both inspired and better equipped to incorporate certain design elements or solutions into their next project.
The design and content of the July/August 2023 issue and the September/October 2023 issue are each notable for their own distinct reasons.
The July/August issue contains several complex stories that the editorial and design convey in a way that is engaging and accessible to all levels of expertise. In “A Welcome Makeover,” a renowned lighting designer breaks down the overhaul of an existing building in great detail and this story is clearly told for readers of all experience levels to understand not only what they did but how they did it. Our WELL-focused stories show readers how architects achieved WELL Building certification in residential and commercial projects and goes so far as to link certain products with specific WELL criteria—something the industry is so in need of that the IWBI (group that invented WELL) recently launched their own “Works with WELL” directory. And you can’t talk about what’s special about July/August without talking about the cover—it had texture and color. It was a unique cover for the magazine, and it created a visceral and emotional response.
The September/October issue was very expert forward—taking important topics—life and death with regard to the Trends in Cancer Care piece—and explaining why design in healthcare is changing and showing readers exactly what those changes look like. Another aspect of these articles that was unique was the variety of visual properties contained within the different pieces—photos, renderings, sketches, product shots, charts, graphs, illustrations—this variety is critical to the type of stories that we tell, but it’s hard to make all these disparate parts and pieces pull together to tell a cohesive, beautiful story…and that’s what happens in this issue—page after page.
