Mission statement: Compact Equipment is a print trade publication and website covering the smaller categories of construction machinery. Our gearheads operate, analyze and write about off-highway equipment such as skid steers, mini excavators, utility vehicles, telehandlers and basically any diesel-powered construction machine (some landscape and ag too) that can be hauled on a trailer without a CDL. Our editorial content is enjoyed on multiple media channels — print, web, YouTube, email, webinars, social media, seminars and beyond. We print six times a year, blast out two e-newsletters every week and usually post about five times a day at www.compactequip.com. Editors travel the globe to visit machine makers like Caterpillar and Volvo, researching new machines, regulations, technologies and trends.

Submission: Compact Equipment readers not only want to experience what it’s like to operate construction equipment, they want to understand what it’s like to experience the culture of the manufacturers behind these machines. That means CE writers need to be out in the field, behind the joysticks and visiting the companies engineering these complex vehicles. In Compact Equipment’s Editor at Large column, editor and publisher Keith Gribbins travels all over the country to operate and inspect off-highway construction equipment and tour and audit production facilities. He then conveys those personal experiences via his Editor at Large column with photography and (often) videos that capture the experience of driving iron and being a full-time machinery journalist.

In 2023, Gribbins traveled extensively for his Editor at Large column, which usually appears in digital first, then print. Two great examples for this entry include: 1) a week spent in England learning about hydrogen engines and 2) a trip out West to operate and explore French compact equipment maker Mecalac. The writing is conversational and perceptive. The access and insights are unique to the CE brand. Online, this department often comes with corresponding videos (dig the Machine Heads video on the Mecalac feature). Those videos are completely self-produced by Keith Gribbins. There’s no better column in the machine sector that interprets complicated markets and machine systems in an effortless and warm style. Editor at Large has been a hit with both machine makers and readers for years.
