This enterprise story examines how forensic veterinarians partner with law enforcement and attorneys to bring animal abusers to justice. Only a few dozen vets in the U.S. who specialize in this work. By following vet Elizabeth Pearlman of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals as she investigates a dog fighting ring in New York state, the reader is granted an insider’s view of where science and the law intersect. Animal cruelty is a federal crime, and each state has its own set of applicable laws.
