Though many parties are now onboard with addressing climate action, few have done so with measurable success. In the face of ambitious but often ambiguous goals on a national and global level, cities and institutions are taking it upon themselves to enact specific climate initiatives, particularly in relation to the building sector, which contributes approximately 40% of global carbon emissions. Typically, the climate objectives of high-profile projects are covered on a superficial or speculative basis; for example, “this building is designed to remove x tons of carbon” if and when it is completed.

This story documents how three leaders in New York City are decarbonizing their completed or in-progress projects in the face of the real and imminent Local Law 97, which requires buildings exceeding 25,000 square feet to meet strict energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emission limits by 2024, with additional limitations going into effect in 2030. New York’s building stock emits more carbon than that of any other American city.
