The auto industry’s looming shift from internal combustion to electric took center stage in 2022, and these three issues of Automotive News demonstrate the exhaustive coverage we provided. The March 28 issue delved into the unprecedented capital outlays automakers are making for EV and battery plants. The April 4 issue featured a section of 15 stories about how EV development is remaking the industry’s complex supply chain. EVs also have weighed heavily on dealers’ minds, as seen in our comprehensive coverage of the National Automobile Dealers Association convention in the March 21 issue. Amid this focus on EVs, the dealership landscape has been roiled by consolidation and new requirements imposed by automakers on their franchisees. Our annual Top 150 dealerships supplement and accompanying stories in the April 4 issue provided in-depth context related to this upheaval, as did the March 21 issue foreshadowing a busy year of dealership buy-sells. In 2022, we transformed our coverage of new technology in the industry from an occasional supplement to a more frequent series of features; the Shift Mobility Report sections inside all three issues reveal the breadth of this coverage. Our innovation reporting team also contributed a two-part series about virtual entertainment technology entering new vehicles.
