Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
SearchCIO.com strives to highlight the technologies and coverage areas that are most critical to the success of chief information officers, chief technology officers, chief security officers and other business executives who have technology decision-making responsibility. Topics span the gamut from the technologies that are important to day-to-day IT and business operations, such as security and risk management, data analytics, cloud computing, and IT systems management; to the cutting-edge technologies poised to change how businesses will operate, such as robotics, machine learning and artificial intelligence and the blockchain. SearchCIO.com aims to define and describe this fast-moving, disruptive field and arm its readers with the information they need to stay relevant, position themselves as business leaders and keep their companies steps ahead of the competition.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
The Internet of Things (IoT) -- a network of physical objects wired up to collect and transmit data in real time -- offers tremendous opportunities for companies across industries to grow and even transform their businesses. The application of this emerging technology to achieve business results is still uncharted territory, however, and many companies are struggling to figure out where to begin with IoT. As the C-suite executive with deep domain expertise and an enterprise-wide view of operations, CIOs would seem well-equipped to assume a leadership role in IoT projects. But, as senior news writer Nicole Laskowski discovered in her reporting, they will have to muster their technical, business and political skills. Capitalizing on IoT will require a deep dive into cutting-edge technologies, a focus on integrating external with internal systems, and, most important, gaining the trust of business colleagues.
Ms. Laskowski began research on this story months before deadline. She read extensively on the technology, a new area of coverage for SearchCIO. She conducted in-depth background interviews with experts to understand how the technology works, specifically how architecture and data flows associated with IoT differ from traditional enterprise architecture. She sought out IT conferences with IoTsessions, polling attendees to gauge their interest in IoT and to learn about the types of questions they needed addressed. The result is a cogent and useful look at how IoT could be a game changer for businesses and for IT organizations, provided senior IT leaders know how to play the game.
