Despite years of research and constant efforts to improve resuscitation practices, survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest in the U.S. remain low. Now some top emergency physicians are investigating a CPR modification—elevating the head by 30 degrees—that, with some other key steps, shows great promise in early tests involving lab pigs. Preliminary data suggest the head-up tilt helps increase key metrics like coronary and cerebral perfusion pressure and reduce dangerous intracranial pressure. While human trials have yet to begin, several fire-rescue departments in South Florida are so convinced of heads-up CPR’s promise, they’re already using it on patients.
This article interviews the cardiologist leading the concept and the two physicians putting it into practice in Florida, where it's already showing positive results.
