The three issues highlight Florida Trend’s ability to produce timely, analytical work on issues that resonate throughout the state.
In producing his July cover story on recycling, Mike Vogel began with reports from several small communities that had either dropped or were considering whether to drop curbside recycling programs. Along with explaining why that was happening and the economics of recycling, Mike compiled fascinating data on Florida’s waste stream and how communities throughout the state handle their garbage. The story raises provocative questions about whether — absent a market for the recycled materials — communities are wasting their money on curbside recycling programs. The issue also highlighted several managing partners at leading law firms, including two African-Americans, and a profile of an institute for autistic children.
Mike’s August profile of Alberto Carvalho likewise put Carvalho’s embrace of choice programs in a statewide context: Florida has established itself at the cutting edge of the choice movement nationally, with some 40% of public school students not attending the school for which they’re zoned. Carvalho has created a raft of choice programs in a district where only 6% of the students are white, non-Hispanic — and he’s turned the Miami-Dade district into one of the top-performing urban districts in the country.
September’s news peg was Miami’s emergence as both a tech center and a center for cryptocurrency companies. Amy Keller went deeper to integrate the news developments with a readable explanation of what cryptocurrency is and its origins.
