As the only independent publication focused on the U.S. municipal finance market, The Bond Buyer regularly delves into the finances and budgets of the nation’s municipalities and bond-issuing authorities. In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic dramatically altered the landscape for our nation’s cities, and the subsequent fiscal stresses placed on governments necessitated a deepening of that approach. With The Future of Cities, The Bond Buyer expanded its focus to numerous aspects of life in and finances of American cities with a bold project that required massive collaboration between The Bond Buyer editorial staff and various departments at parent company Arizent. The result was a comprehensive, thoroughly reported multiplatform package that expanded the borders of both a “Bond Buyer story” and how we approach a topic that is broader than the industry we cover. We explored this in four parts: how cities of all sizes are being impacted by outmigration; the hard realities and intangibles of the so-called gathering economy – conventions, conferences, theater, sports, arts; the troubled future of urban office space; and problems that lie ahead and how resilience has taken on a new meaning. For each, we explored problems and discussed potential solutions with a written story and a companion podcast. The series also kicked off with a livestream video discussion spanning all four topics. The result was one of the most ambitious projects we have undertaken, one that received very positive feedback from both our core audience and people who discovered our work for the first time.
