Chris Krebs, the director of the federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), spent much of 2020 helping to coordinate nationwide efforts to protect elections from foreign meddling and domestic misinformation. Although his work was widely known and highly regarded in the cybersecurity community, it wasn't national news until after Election Day, when his assurances about the security of the 2020 results drew the attention of the White House. President Donald Trump fired Krebs for contradicting his unfounded comments that the election was rigged. CyberScoop reporter Sean Lyngaas covered the breaking news with insight and succinct analysis, then followed up with two more vital stories about the leadership vacuum at CISA.
