Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
The mission of Network World is to provide comprehensive articles that address the technology developments essential to networking professionals who design, build and maintain the electronic infrastructure that underpins modern business. That includes communications networks within these organizations as well as internal and external access to business assets housed in corporate data centers.
We do that with a mix of online news, features, packages about single topics, Q&As with industry influencers, profiles of important vendors and a stable of bloggers with deep expertise in their respective fields.
The readers we target are practitioners who operate data centers that are housed on-premises but also within public clouds. Their task is to make the information that resides there secure and rapidly accessible to individuals and applications that need it. That simple goal is enormously complex and involves efficiently storing data but also creating and constantly upgrading the networks over which this data travels. The responsibilities are varied: End users must be authenticated and authorized, communications must be protected, bandwidth must be adequate to minimize delay, attackers must be thwarted, data must be gathered and analyzed.
Network World serves these professionals with cutting-edge information that helps them successfully carry out their daily jobs using the most current, efficient, cost-effective means available and so to reach their ultimate goal of bringing business success to their organizations. To the extent that we succeed, we help them succeed.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
5G is a wireless technology that is about to dramatically raise the bandwidth of cellular connections. So far, it' hasn't been in wide use, but Whirlpool is deploying it at one of its plants to overcome the shortcomings of Wi-Fi that is being used to guide driverless vehicles at the facility. This article presents the problems as stated by Whirlpool and its solution as described by collaborators AT&T and Seegrid that are installing the 5G gear. It adds context about the current status of 5G and the prospects Whirlpool has for its further use in other facilities and for other purposes. With those bases covered, the article offers up lessons-learned for readers considering deploying 5G themselves.
