Eero Saarinen is one of the most celebrated architects of the 20th century. With the TWA Terminal at JFK Airport, the St. Louis Arch, Dulles Airport, and more, he left his distinctly modern mark on the face of the United States during the heart of The American Century. Less well known is the role of his wife, Aline Louchheim Saarinen, in shaping that image, impact, and legacy—especially after Saarinen died suddenly in 1961. Author Eva Hagberg unveils her research into the Saarinen archives to reveal how Aline’s fingerprints appear on nearly everything Eero did, and how he—they—publicized it all. Hagberg details how Aline invented the role of the modern architectural publicist, and helped to turn Eero into one of the world’s most famous architects in the process.
