In our annual “What’s Next” issue, we delved into the hype and the truth behind the oncoming “smart city”—that interconnected future city that always seems to be right around the corner. The feature package highlights the good intentions, complicated realities, and false promises of high-tech infrastructure where cities monitor and react to big data. For the 10-story package, art director Robb Ogle used an eclectic mixture of photos, renderings, illustrations, and sidebars, all tied together visually using a unified color scheme and typography. References to fictional utopias and dystopias like the Emerald City of Oz, or con artist sales tactics of The Music Man, were referenced in the text. On the cover, a digital millennial ruby-sneakered Dorothy takes a phone pic of low-resolution headline lettering. Glitching and bitmapped block graphics are repeated throughout the interior pages.
