The mission of strategy+business (s+b) is to provide business executives and thought leaders in government, academia and the private sector with commentary, research, and practical ideas that bridge the gap between management theory and practice. We feature writing by chief executives and other well-known corporate leaders, best-selling business thinkers and philosophers, prominent academics and researchers, seasoned consultants, and journalists with a track record in revealing the patterns below the surface.Through in-depth feature stories, thought leader interviews, and strategic commentaries, each issue of strategy+business provides an informed, global perspective on ideas and practices relevant to large-scale corporations. According to a recent study analyzing s+b’s circulation, 38 percent of s+b print readers are C-suite executives ranked vice president or higher. Our audience includes decision makers at small firms, managers rising within large companies, prominent academics, and others with an interest in understanding the business and management systems, practices, and ideas that define our world.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
In a world of rapid change, it is vital for companies to adopt a dynamic approach to developing strategy. In “How to build disruptive strategic flywheels,” authors Sundar Subramanian and Anand Rao argue that by harnessing machine learning, data analytics, and artificial intelligence, companies can develop strategies that are resilient in the face of change. By gamifying strategy, considering large numbers of possibilities and scenarios, testing options, and then scaling up, companies can construct strategic models that are equivalent to flywheels. These models provide a continuing source of energy and enable constant improvement.
The illustration for the article was done by Neil Webb, known for his concise visual solutions and strong graphic composition. Webb’s work is inspired by early 20th century design. To compliment that detailed illustration, our design team — John Klotnia, Laura Eitzen, Jennifer Thai and Leigh Jagareski of Opto Design — selected typography that adds a visual twist and depth.
