In “Breaking the Cycle,” Editor Derek Prall examines a controversial organization called Advance Peace. Founded by the often-controversial figure DeVone Boggan, the program recruits actively violent gang members who have eluded law enforcement’s grasp seeking to turn them away from a life of crime. Using unorthodox – and often unsavory methods – Boggan claims to have dramatically reduced gun violence in several crime-ridden California cities.

While the numbers seem to back up this claim, not everyone is convinced Advance Peace can claim responsibility for these reductions, and some feel their tactics could even be counterproductive.

Using the case study of Advance Peace, Prall explores the complex world of retaliatory gang violence, the interplay between intervention and enforcement in reducing crime and America’s often flawed relationship with the concept of justice.
