As senior editor Eric Wills states in the opener to the 11th annual edition of our Architect 50 ranking: “The Architect 50 attempts to answer a simple question: Who had the best year?” Now, that question is simple, but finding the right answer is not. It involves analyzing a complex web of data—provided by American architecture firms about their business practices and billings, their designs and portfolio, their diversity and pay equity successes, and their efforts at resilient design and other measures of sustainability—which was distilled and synthesized by our partners over at Karlin Associates. This year, design darlings and Texas sustainability heroes Lake|Flato Architects took home the top prize. Art director Robb Ogle interpreted a multitude of data points in a sleek design, on a limited number of pages in the print issue—expanded for the online viewership with extra data and charts.
