This narrative account by architecture professor and historian Despina Stratigakos details her uncovering of evidence that the Nazi regime—which famously sought to destroy any connections to war crimes—intentionally ordered the destruction of World War I memorials across Europe to falsely position Germany as the victor of the Great War. The story ties Stratigakos’s original research with historical events, context, and insights behind the monuments discussed, and deftly draws parallels between past and present-day world news and figures to highlight its relevance. Historical photographs, postcards, and drawings add to the haunting tenor of the story. Without the author’s expertise and original research, coupled with happenstance, a damning slip of paper misfiled in Germany’s Military Archives may have sat unnoticed forever.
