Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Cities from Los Angeles to Phoenix to Minnesota are seeing a growing number of seniors living on their streets. Nationally, the population of people 65 and older experiencing homelessness is estimated to swell from 40,000 in 2017 to 106,000 by 2030. “The New Age of Homelessness” delves into this troubling trend by introducing readers to Carlos Gonzalez, a 66-year-old former auto painter who lived in his Toyota Corolla after a series of personal setbacks. He recently moved into Casa Carmen, a new 25-unit development that provides housing and services to seniors 62 and older who were homeless in Los Angeles. We learn how affordable housing developers financed and built Casa Carmen as well as The Veranda in Northern California to serve the needs of at-risk seniors.
Reporter Donna Kimura traveled to Los Angeles to meet with Gonzalez and visit Casa Carmen. She also conducted numerous interviews with developers, housing officials, researchers, and others.
The story is a look at how the homeless population is changing and what it means to communities, health-care systems, and the affordable housing industry. “The New Age of Homelessness” details why the nation is seeing more older people on the streets and the challenges of providing housing for them. While the article shares the story of Gonzalez and the developers behind his new home, it offers key information that other developers, housing officials, hospital administrators, and city leaders can use to begin looking at solutions in their communities.
