The ABA Journal is the largest legal magazine in the country. In print and online, the Journal covers the trends, the influencers and the dynamics contributing to a fast-changing legal profession. Readership includes the more than 400,000 members of the American Bar Association and readers of abajournal.com, which is available for free to the public.

Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:

The legal profession is in the midst of significant transformation. New market pressures, many involving technology advancements, are forcing change in a profession notoriously resistant to deviating from precedent.

The Journal approaches coverage of this sensitive topic by focusing on the change-makers, the innovators, the Legal Rebels. What started as annual franchise was in 2018 a yearlong effort featuring monthly print, regular web, monthly audio and often weekly social components. In print, the year’s class of Rebels was named with summaries of their work.

Full profiles appeared online at legalrebels.com. Additional trailblazing lawyers were featured in monthly podcasts, with teasers appearing in the print magazine. Snippets of these interviews and project highlights are posted on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram. Reporters also kept tabs on the Rebels named since 2009 and filed regular updates to the site. With this comprehensive approach, the Journal has expanded the reach of the project to attract a wide and diverse audience.
