The mission of strategy+business (s+b) is to provide business executives and thought leaders in government, academia and the private sector with commentary, research, and practical ideas that bridge the gap between management theory and practice. Alone among major business publications, s+b draws on a combination of journalists, academics, consultants, and corporate strategists to contribute articles that set the agenda for global industry and commerce. According to a recent study analyzing s+b’s circulation, 34 percent of s+b print readers are C-suite executives ranked vice president or higher. Our audience includes decision makers at small firms, managers rising within large companies, prominent academics, and others with an interest in understanding the business and management systems, practices, and ideas that define our world.

Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:

Entertainment and media enterprises have been in a similar scramble for years now, and strategy+business explored key emerging trends in a series of articles centered around the industry published in our Summer 2018 issue. In one of these pieces, “Video Gaming Levels Up into a Sport,” sports journalist Bob Woods describes how online games have evolved into a fullfledged sport, complete with big-money tournaments, college scholarships, and dedicated arenas.

The illustration for the article was done by eBoy, a team comprised of Kai Vermehr, Steffen Sauerteig and Svend Smital and arguably the most famous name in the world of pixel art. Their painstakingly complex pieces leave the viewer ogling, searching out all the tiny details, that could otherwise be missed. To compliment that detailed pixel illo, our design team — John Klotnia, Laura Eitzen, and Leigh Jagareski of Opto Design — selected typography that compliments the style in a fun, fresh way. And drives home the point of the article: unpacking how e-sports evolved from a hobby into an obsession, into a business.
