Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
The flagship magazine of the American Bar Association, the ABA Journal is a general interest legal publication covering the trends, people and finances of the legal industry. Its audience includes the more than 400,000 members of the ABA, readers of ABAJournal.com, those engaged on social media, and podcast listeners.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
These issues represent the breadth of subjects the Journal covers: matters of national importance; ways lawyers can most effectively run their businesses; historic events that reverberate today; and emerging legal controversies that may affect the way history is written tomorrow.
Recognizing that our audience is a diverse group of busy professionals, we produce journalism that informs, educates and entertains a broad readership. In October, in partnership with Working Mother Media, we reported on the leading law firms for women, and explored the motivations behind the nation’s top law enforcement officer, Attorney General Jeff Sessions. In November we investigated the consequences of jailing young women, and covered simmering controversies over native Hawaiian sovereignty. In December we launched our “Web 100” to celebrate the best in legal blogging, podcasting and social media. We also examined the pitfalls of extra-judicial systems built to deal with sex assault on college campuses, and took a close look at the ways states are tackling criminal justice reform.
All three issues include articles in our year-long series on “Building a 21st Century Law Firm”--a subject so important to our readers, we lined up a team of leading experts to share their expertise.
These issues also represent the variety of design techniques, from the powerful photography of December’s justice reform piece, photo illustration in October’s “President’s Court” article, or illustration in November’s “Workers Wronged” feature and in December’s “Web 100.
