Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
Healthcare Design serves an audience of architects, interior designers, hospital administrators, facility managers, engineers, and key members of the construction community as the premier source of insight, information, and inspiration for planning, designing, and constructing new or renovated healthcare facilities.
Through our various channels–magazine, website, events, and social media–we actively engage this community with highly focused editorial content written by professional journalists and industry experts. Our goal is to help our audience navigate the current healthcare landscape and manage the evolving expectations surrounding design/architecture/construction in order to build environments that improve patient outcomes and satisfaction while also embodying high design standards. With every story we write, we aim to serve the very specific perspective of our healthcare design community.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Healthcare Design is the leader in its market, serving a sophisticated group of architects, interior designers, facility owners, and managers with top-of-mind, professionally reported content. But the overall design, the organization of content, and mix of stories were due for an upgrade. The quality of the content was well recognized; the audience’s changing needs and expectations for a design publication, however, demanded that we not rest on our laurels.
The editorial team worked with Metaleap Creative to hone our mission as we revamped the magazine from top to bottom. The mission: Inspire and energize architects and creatives while satisfying the practical needs of facility managers and administrators. The redesign goals: a modern, streamlined, sophisticated, dynamic, and functional book.
We touched everything, from the logo to the fonts to the basic page grid. We added illustrations. The trim size got bigger and the paper stock better. We introduced new columns (see page 8 of the September issue for details) and reorganized the flow of the book. The yearlong process yielded a more design-forward aesthetic and an injection of even better, deeper content that raise the bar for this industry.
Hospitals and healthcare spaces are not a “sexy” segment of the design industry. But the work healthcare architects and designers do is extraordinary in striking a balance between life-and-death functionality and healing, beautiful design. The best healthcare design manages to walk the line in a way other sectors can’t begin to approach. The newly redesigned Healthcare Design acknowledges and celebrates that achievement.
