Description of the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
For six Fridays in the fall of 2023, Automotive News faced a unique challenge: How do we report on the United Auto Workers strike knowing that it could end by the time our print issue reaches readers the following week? That guided our strategy as we filled each edition with comprehensive stories on the rapidly evolving negotiations without giving our audience potentially outdated news. The Sept. 25, Oct. 2 and Oct. 9 issues of Automotive News show some of the ways we covered the strike for our loyal print readership. Reporters spent considerable time taking in the atmosphere on the picket lines and talking to the workers involved, including during a historic visit by President Joe Biden. We combined that humanity and color with smart analysis of what the parties on each side of the bargaining table were doing. We also heavily focused on the widespread collateral damage inflicted by the walkout on suppliers, dealers and consumers.
As much as that was a staff-wide effort, we plenty of other news requiring our attention at the same time. These issues demonstrate just some of that work, from retail megadeals and executive shuffles to electric vehicle tax credits and the launch of Tesla’s unusual Cybertruck. The Oct. 2 issue concluded Future Product Pipeline, an 11-week series detailing the top-secret product plans of nearly 50 automotive brands. The following week, we aggregated those plans into a supplement that many readers save for future reference.
Each issue in this entry contains our Shift Mobility Report, a look at new ways of thinking emerging across the industry. Other features include Service & Parts, Industry Innovations, Retail Technology and Finance & Insurance, all of which target important niches of our audience. On Oct. 9, we named 17 Champions of Diversity, highlighting people and companies that are making the industry more inclusive and welcoming.
