Description of the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Associated Luxury Hotels International is a member-only Global Sales Organization dedicated to serving the meeting and event marketplace, with editorial content designed to position ALHI brands as authoritative thought leaders.
In late 2022, we launched a new print publication entitled Beyond the Meeting Room, a business publication that aims to meet our audience of highly engaged meeting planners at a personal level. We could have easily focused on issues within the meeting and event space, but we wanted something different, something unique, something that could not be found with our competitive set. The Beyond the Meeting Room concept is simply, “What can we learn from outside the four walls of a meeting room?” The delivery of thought leadership focused on luxury, education, life and lifestyle as a frame of reference. Our mission was simply to tell engaging, compelling stories.
With that in mind, after launching our first issue with international chef and humanitarian Jose Andres on the cover, we followed up in 2023 with cover stories on actress Kim Fields, author Mitch Albom and Lisa Sun, author and founder/CEO of Gravitas. Throughout the first year, we interviewed the likes of actress Suzanne Somers, Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Show, NFL Hall of Famer Charley Haley on his program to combat childhood illiteracy, Deepa Purushothaman, senior partner at Deloitte, author, TED Talks speaker and board member for Avasara, India’s first leadership academy for girls, Cole Lyle, who was instrumental in establishing the PAWS Act (Puppies Assisting Wounded Servicemembers), and Jim Sonefeld, author and drummer for Hootie and the Blowfish.
Every issue included a gatefold cover as well as a photo-driven, eight-page double-gatefold, bound-in section on topics such as ALHI on the Greens (featuring well-known golf courses on member properties), Art in Hotels and Holiday Displays.
We had stories on tequila, and champaign, luxury tailgating, yoga, pickleball and spas. We featured on sections on leadership and what CEOs are reading. We wrote about sports but not in the traditional sense, rather, we did a story on the growth of women’s flag football, the popularity of rodeo and the family atmosphere at baseball games. We wrote about the importance of donating blood and how dogs are trained to serve the blind.
We made a commitment to include content about human trafficking, an issue our industry is committed to fighting, in every issue.
From a design perspective, we tabbed acclaimed Justin Armburger to create a brand identity for the new publication, as well as art direct and design each print issue. The design mission is simple: to tell stories well. We use beautiful photography, vibrant illustrations, color and typography thoughtfully to complement and enhance our storytelling. Our stories may vary greatly from one issue to next, but our readers can always expect an adventure from cover to cover.
