It is assumed that adversarial nations have plans in place for offensive cyber activities in the event of a conflict. How those plans might be executed has largely been theoretical. Russia's invasion of Ukraine, however, provided insight into how cyber warfare could be carried out. Security leaders have been watching the Russia-Ukraine cyberwar for clues about current and future risks and how to prepare for them.

More recently the Israel-Hamas conflict has added new twists to how cyberwarfare is conducted, particularly around risk of retaliation for organizations that support one side or the other.

CSO columnist Christopher Burgess provided his take on both situations. He is well qualified having spent 30 years with the CIA as an intelligence officer and as a chief information security officer himself.
