Senior Art Director Scott Hilling says ENR’s 2022 construction photo contest layout let him take the storytelling aspect of his job to the next level. “I always approach the layout of the photo contest issue as if I’m curating an art exhibit. There is meaning and thought put into where and why each photograph is placed on the page. As I worked through the layout a story began to unfold of our industry going through the COVID-19 pandemic, being quarantined and sheltering in place, to venturing back out into the world, as scary as it was and then succeeding in our now-altered reality. The subjects and actions depicted in the photos, when put together from start to finish of the layout, brought this important story to light in my mind. I found myself astonished that 37 separate photos shot all over the world—by so many different photographers—could all come together so perfectly to tell one story. It’s a testament to the photographers and their work, as well as to the construction industry’s resiliency. The layout's design tells this story in a new and creative way."
